Common therapeutic uses of Ketamine include interrupting depression, addressing trauma, developing spiritual connection and expanding consciousness and creativity. This is a legally prescribed medication.
You are not alone if ketamine is a bit of a mystery.
People have heard it referred to as a horse tranquilizer, an illegal party drug or might have heard about people going into a “K hole.” It’s also common for there to be a prejudice against Ketamine as compared to classic psychedelics like mushrooms or ayahuasca because it is not plant/fungi based. All of these prejudices make sense! I had them too at one point.
Ketamine is an amazing compound. It is on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines. It is remarkably safe, can be used in a variety of ways, and can be legally prescribed in California. While its psychedelic effect is different than other psychedelics its effects can be equally powerful.
Ketamine was first synthesized in 1962 and approved for use in the United States in 1970. Since its development it has been regularly used for anesthesia in veterinary and human medicine. Used recreationally in moderate doses, ketamine can enhance connection to music and create a trance-like euphoria. Currently, it is also used therapeutically as an adjunct to regular talk therapy.
At very high doses ketamine produces complete sedation, amnesia and pain relief. If you wanted to set a broken bone, for example, ketamine would be a great choice. At moderate doses, ketamine’s effects are more meditative, relaxing and consciousness-expanding.
While each person’s experience will be different, most experience low doses of ketamine as relaxing, meditative and pleasant. Sometimes, emotions that have been hard to access come more easily to the surface. Because we are all different people, each experience will be unique. Technically speaking, ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic—meaning that you might notice a feeling of subtle detachment from your physical body. Typically, auditory experience is enhanced and your thoughts and emotions may merge pleasantly with the music.
Unlike other pain relieving medicines ketamine has the advantage of not suppressing your breathing or heart rate and will not dangerously decrease blood pressure. It is also remarkable in that it is rarely contraindicated with other medications. For example, you can continue to take antidepressant medication while taking ketamine. In liquid form Ketamine can be administered intravenously, injected in the muscle, or snorted intranasally. In powder form it can be snorted intranasally and as a lozenge it is slowly absorbed in the mouth. In my office I use ketamine lozenges that dissolve in the mouth over 15 minutes.
Yes and no. Because ketamine produces effects that are often subjectively positive it can be something that people are drawn to doing often. What makes it different from other potentially addictive medicines, however, is that it doesn’t produce symptoms of withdrawal if you stop taking it (unless you use ketamine daily in which case there have been reports of minor withdrawal symptoms). In other words, it's habit forming potential is emotional, not physical. It is extremely rare for a physiological dependence to be created.
My sessions are three hours long with the actual effects of the medicine lasting about 1 hour. We spend time together before the session identifying your intention for the journey and, again, after the journey is complete to begin the process of integrating the experience. If it feels safe to you, you will be wearing an eye mask to promote an inward experience. Specialized music will accompany the experience to deepen the process. I will be there to help support and guide the process, taking notes if anything important arises that you'd like me to capture.
This is different for everyone so we will collaborate to decide what suits your unique situation best. It’s often a good idea to have 4-6 weekly sessions to begin then space sessions out by 1-2 months. Again, this is not the same for everyone so we will co-create your frequency together. While some people find a cadence of about 1 session per month to be helpful, others feel like they don’t need ketamine anymore after a few sessions.
Each 3 hour session is $525. There is also a one time cost upfront for medical intake ($200) and the prescription medicine itself (about $150 for 15 doses).
To begin, please find the instructions for reaching me via the Signal app on the “Contact” tab of this website. From there we’ll find a time to connect for a short introductory phone call. If you would like to go through with the process I will refer you to a Medical Doctor who will conduct an intake interview and prescribe you the Ketamine lozenges. Once the ketamine has been mailed to you I will share an online booking link where you can book a session. Please note: at this time I only offer ketamine sessions on Tuesdays.
